MEC / Minimum Essential Coverage Mandate

The Affordable Care Act states that all individuals must have health benefits and all employers with 50 or more full-time employees must provide coverage to all eligible employees or they are subject to fines/penalties. This can be known as “pay or play” or employer shared responsibility.  Groups that have 50+ employees must offer a Minimum Essential Coverage aka a MEC plan.

Companies with more than 50 employees must offer are mandated by MEC Minimum Essential Coverage Mandate

Minimum Essential Coverage is defined as the type of health insurance coverage that you must have in order to comply with the individual mandate set forth by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) . From January 1, 2014, and onward, individuals must have MEC insurance or they will be subject to a tax penalty.

What does a MEC plan cover?

MEC plans generally cover preventive and wellness-related tests and treatments. While they meet certain requirements outlined under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and ERISA, they are not what most think of as traditional health insurance.
